What is the best way to reduce local floodings?

Problems:  Water Pollution, floodings and big amount of money for stormwater management what we have today in places in which grey infrastructure are used.

What is the best way to reduce local floodings?

First, I want to explain, what issues we have, if we use grey infrastructure. Grey infrastructure is a system of pipes which convey water runoff from roads, pathways and roofs more often outside of the city.

According to ASLA report “Banking on Green”, the best way is return to natural processes such as usage of soils and vegetation to infiltrate, evapotranspire, and/or recycle stormwater runoff. It means creation new sustainable GREEN Infrastructure.

The ASLA offers three options and provide examples of significant results in relation to effectiveness, esthetics and cost-effectiveness. 

Three green solutions:

  • Pervious material for pavement, instead of impervious materials like asphalt and concrete
  • Creation wetlands or rain gardens or green streets (low swale, wetland biofilter, water quality garden), plants can intercept runoff
  • establish Green roofs, they accumulate a big amount of water and reduce runoff from the roof

Green Infractracture techniques is shown a positive effect in High School in Lousiana, City of Portland, Green Roofs in Washington, DC and others.

Advantages of GREEN Infrastructure:

  • is cost-effective (less expensive managing of runoff and infrastructure cost)
  • increase energy-efficiency and reduce energy costs by reducing heating and cooling demands
  • give opportunity to re-use water runoff for landscaping
  • reduce flooding, therefore reduce damages to property and capital for storm water volume control
  • reduce water pollution and improve water quality
  • reusing water more efficiently on site
  • improve air quality
  • increase habitat and green spaces 
  • enhance human health
